May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT), when we are reminded of the importance of global action to fight against global inequality.
This year’s IDAHOBIT theme is “No one left behind: equality, freedom, and justice for all,” emphasizing unity and solidarity in championing the human rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities worldwide.
In recent times, there has been a noticeable surge in anti-2SLGBTQIA+ sentiments on a global scale, driven by hate-filled and gender-critical movements, some religious sponsored. Unfortunately, Canada has not been exempt from this trend.
Over the past year, there has been an increase in the introduction of anti-trans policies and policy proposals at both provincial and federal levels. Additionally, incidents of hate crimes, hate speech, and coordinated anti-trans protests in various Canadian cities have witnessed a concerning rise.
As people of faith, may this IDAHOBIT’s theme – “No one left behind: equality, freedom, and justice for all,” be a reminder of our compassion, love, and call to uphold the inherent dignity of all persons, without distinction, and to ensure an end to violence and discrimination directed against all individuals based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
